The Mississippi State University Libraries seeks an innovative colleague to join us as the Data Science Coordinator.  The successful candidate will collaborate with subject specialists within the library to develop and promote data services.  Equally important will be the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and staff in support of data services in both teaching and research.  This is a full-time, tenure track position (Assistant/Associate/Full) that reports to the Associate Dean of Research, Teaching, and Engagement.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Data Science Coordinator will work across the libraries to advance the use of data in teaching and research.  Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist university faculty, staff, and students in the use of data science and/or data analytics software;
  • Support researchers in finding, evaluating, and analyzing data;
  • Work as an embedded partner within the newly formed Data Science undergraduate curriculum;
  • Provide individual and small group consultations and instruction on the effective and ethical use of data;
  • Develop workshops, tutorials, and guides to support the data sciences mission of the library and the university;
  • Collaborate with other library faculty and staff in serving the research and instructional needs of the MSU community.

This position serves as a member of the library faculty (12-month, tenure track), holds faculty rank, and is expected to participate in teaching, research, and service as outlined in the Libraries’ promotion and tenure document.  Rank will be dependent upon the qualifications of the candidate, with a minimum rank of Assistant Professor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • ALA accredited Master’s in Library Science or a master’s degree or higher in a relevant field
  • Ability to support the research needs of a diverse university community
  • Ability to work with large data sets using Stata, SAS, SPSS, R, SQL, or other similar tools
  • Familiarity with data science methods and concepts
  • Ability to deliver effective presentations and instruction related to data science and related research topics
  • Ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse environment
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Second master’s or other relevant certifications
  • Proficiency with Python
  • Experience working with data management plans
