Job Description

The University of Louisville (UofL) Kornhauser Health Sciences Library (KHSL) invites applications from self-motivated candidates for an entry-level position of Hospital Librarian, providing information and research support to the students, staff, researchers, teaching faculty, and practicing clinicians of the University of Louisville (UofL) Rowntree Medical Library and approved contracted services for the UofL Health System. This is a 12-month, term faculty position, renewable annually with full benefits.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Under supervision of the Hospital Library Manager, maintain the space, services, and operations of Rowntree
Medical Library and provide information support for the UofL Health System
• Maintain collaborative relationships within clinical departments and UofL Health entities to support information literacy and evidence-based practice
• Promote library resources, services, and education to users in their own environments
• Provide timely, evidence-based information support as requested using current technology and resources
• Keep affiliated groups and library users informed of developments with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices for information in health sciences
• Provide proactive, high-quality customer service to library users, including activities such as in-depth reference consultations and assistance with accessing resources
• Assists diverse patron populations with basic technology and troubleshooting questions
• Practice inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility within all aspects of the role
• Provide regular reference support and occasional backup coverage at KHSL service desks

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program by the time of hire. Candidates with an advanced degree in biomedical, nursing, health education, or other relevant discipline by the time of hire, with demonstrated interest in health sciences librarianship, will also be considered
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in multiple formats to diverse audiences
• Demonstrated ability to think and react quickly, including evidence of initiative, and flexibility with planning and problem-solving
• Ability to use current technologies and learn new trends for delivering library services
• Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team

Desirable Qualifications
• Knowledge of biomedical and evidence-based practice literature, research, and tools
• Experience working with users in their environments, as opposed to the traditional library setting
• Experience working within the clinical or academic health sciences environment
• Experience in a hospital or health sciences library
• Experience using EndNote or other citation management software
• Experience using LibGuides and/or other SpringShare products

Both initial rank and salary for this annually renewable 12-month term position are dependent on experience and qualifications of the successful candidate; the anticipated initial rank is Instructor or Assistant Professor, with a minimum salary for Instructor starting at $46,000/year. The successful candidate will also receive a comprehensive benefits package, and an annual vacation of 22 working days. Kornhauser Health Sciences Library and the Rowntree Medical Library are located at the downtown Health Sciences Center campus, three miles north of the main university campus. Comprised of the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Public Health, as well as UofL Hospital, this campus is home to over 50% of the university faculty and receives 90% of grant funding. With the establishment of the eQuality educational model in 2014, the University of Louisville became the first school in the nation to fully integrate content addressing competent care for individuals who are LGBTQ+, gender
nonconforming, and born with differences of sex development into the medical school curriculum.
