Job Description

The University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a team-oriented and engaged E-Resources Metadata Librarian to join our staff.

Reporting to the Head of Resource Description and Management, the E-Resources Metadata Librarian leads the University Library’s e-resources cataloging activities and plays an integral role in acquiring, activating, verifying, and monitoring the continued accessibility of machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records. The E-Resources Metadata Librarian will join the Resource Description and Management (RDM) unit within the Technical Services department made up of librarians and staff with expertise in describing and managing all formats of library materials and multiple non-English languages who work together within a collaborative team structure to make discoverable a diverse array of library materials to advance instruction and scholarship across campus. The person in this role will set priorities, train and supervise staff, manage projects, and develop workflows in close collaboration with the E-Resources Acquisitions Librarian and other colleagues in Technical Services as part of a cross-functional team that strives to deliver a seamless user experience within a complex discovery environment in an effort to uphold the organization’s commitment to its priorities of accelerating learning, discovery, creativity, and informed citizenship through the rapid and seamless provision of access to dynamic collections

The person in this role will work closely with colleagues in Resource Acquisitions and Management to coordinate decision-making around the acquisition of machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records immediately upon their availability, participate in troubleshooting access to e-resources with a cross-functional team of Technical Services staff, and be central to the libraries’ effective melding of metadata schemas in creating a cohesive, user-friendly catalog interface. This position will be pivotal in building out their team to continue to exercise bibliographic control over an ever-increasing number of e-resources. This position will contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of local workflows, documentation, and record-keeping practices for electronic resources description and management, including training and supervising student workers and staff as needed. Additionally, the person in this role will oversee the department’s collection of e-resources holdings statistics; establish and maintain professional relationships with library record vendors in support of the acquisition of e-resource records and collective troubleshooting of problems with access; serve on relevant Library committees, task forces, and working groups and represent UNC University Libraries at consortial and professional venues related to electronic resources description, management, and access, contributing to the professional dialogue and a wide variety of relevant Library initiatives.

Required Qualifications, Competencies & Experience

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or a related advanced degree
  • Familiarity with trends and applications of current and emerging technologies as they relate to metadata creation, manipulation, and use, as well as library discovery systems.
  • Experience with metadata standards, such as Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME), Resource Description and Access (RDA), Dublin Core, Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS), Resource Description Framework (RDF) and other emerging data standards.
  • Experience in project management and cross-unit collaboration.
  • Understanding of concepts of, and techniques and tools for data integration, “Extract, Transform, and Load” (ETL) processes, utilizing application programming interfaces (APIs), scripting languages, and other approaches to combining and leveraging multiple data sources.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work creatively and collaboratively in a team environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with non-machine-readable cataloging (MARC) metadata schemas, vocabularies, and content standards, such as Dublin Core (DC), Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) and various encoding/transmission formats, such as Resource Description Framework (RDF), Extensible Markup Language (XML) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)
  • Familiarity with metadata management tools such as WorldShare Collection Manager, Serials Solutions, aka Ex Libris 360 machine-readable cataloging (MARC) Updates, and with vendor-provided records
  • Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution.
  • Familiarity with Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) or other Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) programs
  • Experience with Sierra and/or Alma
  • Flexibility and a high degree of comfort with change, and enthusiasm for an innovative and evolving environment
  • Supervisory experience

Compensation Information:
This is a twelve-month, nonfaculty academic librarian appointment. Standard state benefits include annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement. The salary range for the E-Resources Metadata Librarian position begins at 50,400. The University Libraries intend to hire at a minimum of $70,860 with a salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement to include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
