Based on many recent conversations with global library and special collections leaders, it is clear that significant challenges continue to exist farther upstream in the archival process, well before discovery and access. Early stages like metadata creation are highly manual, time-consuming, and difficult to scale, and have led to decades-long backlogs in processing these collections. ITHAKA is developing a potentially transformative digital collections processing solution that leverages AI to significantly clear backlogs, accelerate the scale and speed of processing workflows, and amplify the expertise of archivists and special collections librarians. This session will include a demonstration of ITHAKA’s prototype, sharing insights from what their team has learned thus far, and asking ASERL members for guidance as they prepare to launch this new service later this year.
