Presentation Summary
As the volume of digital data continues to rise, there is an increasing need for expertise in data evaluation, analysis, and visualization. Employers are increasingly looking for graduates who possess strong data literacy and analysis skills. While students often learn various tools and techniques in academic settings, opportunities to gain hands-on experience in applying this knowledge to real-world challenges are limited. This gap presents a unique opportunity for academic libraries to support students in applying and developing their skills. This webinar will outline the establishment of a data fellowship program for STEM undergraduate students at Florida State University Libraries. Now in its fourth year, the program employs a peer-to-peer support model, where student “data fellows” provide training and research support on topics such as data literacy, data science, data analysis, and open data practices to undergraduate and graduate students at FSU. These experiences allow the fellows to gain practical skills that help ensure post-graduation success. This webinar will describe the program’s structure, showcase successful projects undertaken by the fellows, discuss challenges and insights gained thus far, and outline future plans for the program.
