The ASERL Promise: Our Expectations for Participation

NOTE:  The following replaces ASERL’s Code of Conduct, which was in place from March 2018 through October 2022.

ASERL members believe that critical thinking and innovative problem-solving happens best when people with a wide array of experiences and perspectives collaborate as peers in trusting, welcoming environments – whether in-person or online.  ASERL expects its community members to contribute to thoughtful, creative, and respectful spaces for themselves and their colleagues.

ASERL’s Promise

  • As a community, we value our time together and strive to provide thoughtful and respectful environments
  • We start events on time, we share materials in advance when possible, and we are intrigued by the differences we encounter
  • We minimize our screen time and other distractions during meetings
  • Although rare, we take reports of conduct violations confidentially and very seriously

ASERL Principles of Conduct

  • All participants assume responsibility for the quality of the event by being present, prepared, attentive, and engaged
  • We communicate authentically and balance our participation – we speak and listen
  • We engage in difficult topics with respect and care
  • We assume positive intent and give benefit of the doubt
  • We ask that incidents of unwelcome conduct be reported promptly to ASERL leadership

ASERL values your presence and constructive participation in our shared endeavors and we thank you for your contributions to the comfort and safety of fellow ASERL collaborators and attendees.
