ASERL’s 2025 Leadership Retreat brought together 28 library staff and librarians from across ASERL’s membership for a dynamic and rejuvenating three-day experience. Hosted by Florida International University (FIU), the retreat was designed to foster new relationships, deepen existing ones, and offer space for reflection, learning, and joy. With sessions focused on topics such as personal branding, mediation skills, imposter syndrome, meditation, and networking—combined with immersive cultural experiences—the retreat proved to be a perfect blend of professional growth and meaningful connection.

Day 1: Connection and Courage at Glenn Hubert Library
The retreat kicked off at FIU’s Glenn Hubert Library, where we were welcomed by the calm, inviting energy of the space. The day began with an engaging session led by Sabine Jean Dantus on Personal Branding That Connects using the FIRST Values Framework. Sabine’s interactive approach encouraged attendees to reflect on how they show up in their professional lives and how to align personal values with public presence.

We then embarked on a campus tour and were challenged to share lunch with someone we hadn’t met before or barely knew from the retreat. This small but powerful idea set the tone for authentic connections. I saw laughter, storytelling, and genuine conversations unfold under the palm trees, beside serene waters, and in the warmth of the Florida sun.

The afternoon featured another standout session with FIU’s Dean of Libraries Nancy Kirkpatrick, who guided us through strategies to combat imposter syndrome. Her openness and candor helped create a supportive atmosphere that invited vulnerability and built confidence. Encourage us to be self advocates. We later explored the I360 Tech Lab, where we experienced firsthand the cutting-edge immersive technologies at FIU libraries.

The day concluded with a lovely reception at FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. With delicious food, refreshing drinks, and engaging conversations, it was the perfect close to a full and inspiring day.

Day 2: Reflection and Rejuvenation at Biscayne Bay Campus
The second day took us to FIU’s stunning Biscayne Bay Campus, home of the Steven and Dorothea Green Library. Dean Kirkpatrick greeted us once again, this time with a backdrop of the breathtaking view.

The morning began with a tranquil sound bath and meditation session—an unexpected but welcome opportunity to slow down and recenter. Afterwards, we enjoyed lunch on campus accompanied by live piano performances that ranged from Mozart to Alicia Keys—creating a soundtrack that matched the retreat’s blend of inspiration and joy.

Attendees also had a chance to explore a lively flea market pop-up on campus before the afternoon sessions, which focused on networking strategies and connecting with FIU library staff. These conversations sparked new ideas and collaborations that will no doubt carry forward beyond the retreat.

Day 3 (Optional): Culture, Coastlines, and Connection
For those able to stay, the final day was a celebration of culture and camaraderie. We began at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood before boarding the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi, where we soaked in coastal views and the vibrant energy of the area. We capped off the day with a memorable waterfront meal at 15th Street Fisheries, enjoying fresh seafood and great company as we watched boats glide by the marina.

This year’s Leadership Retreat was a thriving, innovative, and deeply human experience. It reminded us of the power of showing up for one another—in learning, in rest, and in joy. More than just professional development, it was a celebration of what it means to be part of a community of library professionals committed to growth and connection.
