Overview
ASERL members have long collaborated on collection management issues. Much of this work is done among subsets of our member libraries, or as part of state-based initiatives. In the late 1990′s ASERL helped establish the Group Licensing Program within SOLINET (now LYRASIS) and launched a new level of cooperation among thousands of SOLINET member libraries across the Southeast region.
Founded in 2005, the ASERL Collection Development Initiative was created to identify new opportunities for collaborative purchasing/licensing agreements that bring benefit ASERL libraries — particularly those products and services that target the needs of research libraries and their users. Each year ASERL identifies and negotiates a limited number of “member only” purchase/license offers. In recent years, the Collection Development Initiative has grown to incorporate topical discussions beyond group purchasing or licensing, to share knowledge and best practices about emerging issues surrounding collection management, scholarly communication, and others.
Since 2007, ASERL collection managers and other leaders have gathered for lunchtime meetings during the annual Charleston Conferences each November. These gatherings offer the chance for ASERL colleagues to discuss important issues and to connect (or re-connect) with others in the field. If you would like information about the next gathering of ASERL Collection Development leaders, please contact John Burger. See below for notes from past gatherings.
